1500m SWIM – 40Km BIKE – 10Km RUN

Start 1pm. Registration 10.00am-12.00 noon

17/08/12 Bad news on parking. The weather is doing its best to scupper our plans again. It’s pouring down in Cumbria at present and is now forecast to continue all day and night. We may have revert to no parking at the Sailing Club. The race is not in danger of being cancelled but please allow plenty of time to park. It may necessitate some having to park at Cockermouth School as described in my previous email to entrants. We won’t know for sure until tomorrow morning. Watch this space.

16/08/12 Good news on parking. The ground has dried out better than expected and we should be able to get around half the expected cars into the Sailing Club grounds. There should be no need for anyone to park at Cockermouth School. Those that cant get into the Sailing Club should park sensibly on the side of the road near to the Pheasant Inn on the opposite side of the A66. This is at most 1/2 mile from the Sailing Club.

Welcome to the fourth Lakeland Standard Distance Triathlon. This race is co-organised by Tri-Lakeland Triathlon Club and TriHard Events. It is a more conventional triathlon than the other races organised in the Lake District by Trihard. The run is all on road and there are no mountain passes on the bike section.

The road outside the sailing club, the B5291, will be closed for the duration of the race from near to the junction with the A66 to Ouse Bridge. This should greatly improve safety on the bike entry and exit as well as the start of the run. However it will also mean that cars will not be able to leave the venue until the event is over.

Race Venue; is Bassenthwaite Sailing Club CA13 9YD, on the B5291 just off the A66 at Dubwath 6 miles West of Keswick.

Car Parking; LIMITED PARKING ONLY AT THE SAILING CLUB If spectators want to see part of the bike course a very good vantage point is only 900m from the Sailing Club at Ouse Bridge. This is about ½ way round the bike course and is an easy walk. It is also on the run route, so no need to take the car out of the car park.

Camping; Unfortunately camping is not available at the Sailing Club. There is a caravan site about a mile away Herdwick Croft with very limited camping space. Scotgate Park at the Keswick end of the lake is larger and I am told is very good.

Toilets/Showers; There are changing, toilet and shower facilities available within the sailing club.

Registration; Will be in the Sailing Clubhouse between 10am and 12noon. Here you will be issued with your race number and timing chip. If you cannot produce a current BT race license and you have paid the BT members lower entry fee please bring the extra £4 for a day license. No exceptions. If you are not a British Triathlon member and have paid the correct entry fee you will be issued with a BT day license. This will provide you with British Triathlon insurance cover for the day.

Timing Chip; You will be given an orange timing chip and neoprene ankle strap at registration. Please immediately attach the chip to the strap. If you find that you have to force it on you are doing it incorrectly, please ask rather than damage the strap. The chip must be worn around your ankle (either). If it’s not worn you won’t get a time.

Timing Chip; You will be given an orange timing chip and neoprene ankle strap at registration. Please immediately attach the chip to the strap. If you find that you have to forc

Bike tags; For security purposes you will be issued with a bike tag, this will be stapled to your race number. Detach it and attach to you bike seat rail.

Pre-race Briefing; will be in the transition area at 12.30pm. Attendance is compulsory.

Swim 1500m; There will be 2 swim waves. The waves will be based on gender and age categories. At registration you will be issued with a swim cap, the cap colour will indicate which wave you are in. Please swim in your allocated wave, failure to do so will result in incorrect time calculation and will also make you subject to an additional time penalty. If the water temperature is below 13C the swim will have to be shortened, BT rules.

There will be safety kayaks and a rescue launch on the lake. If you get into difficulty, don’t panic, it’s hard to sink in a wetsuit. Lie on your back hold an arm as high as you can to attract the attention of one of the kayaks. They will then tow you to the shore or to the safety launch.

BTF general advice for swimming
Whilst water quality tests provide an indication of the suitability of a venue for open water swimming they do not mean that there is a complete absence of potential pathogens. There are simple practises that swimmers should be advised to adopt to minimise the risk of infections further:
• Cover all cuts and abrasions, however minor, with sticking plasters. You should not consider swimming if you have deep cuts.
• Wash hands in fresh water before eating after you have swum.
• Take a full shower at the earliest opportunity.
• Try not to ingest water whilst swimming.
• In addition all swimming kit (wetsuit, costume, goggles, hats etc.) should be washed in clean water and thoroughly dried before the next session/event.
If you are unwell, don’t start the race. If you have immune system issues, make sure you take appropriate care.

Cycle 42k; see map One lap. The roads will all be open to other traffic. It is your responsibility to negotiate safely around the route and to comply with all road traffic regulations. The route will be signed and marshalled at key points, however under British Triathlon rules it is the competitors responsibility to know the route. About half way around the bike course you cross a narrow bridge, Ouse Bridge. You must cross this bridge in single file. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.

Run 10k; see map The first kilo will be on closed road however once at Ouse Bridge the remainder of the course will be on open roads.. On leaving the Sailing Club it follows a one lap anti-clockwise course. There is one hill which does go on a bit. It starts after the right turn at 1.8k. There will be a drinks station outside the golf course at about half distance.

Relay Race; The timing chip and strap is your baton. The swimmer will start wearing the chip around their ankle. The changeover point will be at your team bike position in transition. The timing chip must be fastened to the cyclists’ ankle before the bike is removed from the racking. On completion of the bike section, once the bike has been racked the chip must be fitted to the runner’s ankle before setting off on the run. Swimming running or cycling with the chip anywhere other than attached to the ankle will result in disqualification.

Litter; This race takes place in an environmentally sensitive area; it is not acceptable to drop any litter, energy bar/gel wrappers or anything else on any part of the course. It is a criminal offence to drop litter and if caught doing so by any race official will result in disqualification. It is easy to tuck any wrappers etc into the leg of your shorts while you are racing and dispose of properly when you finish.

Marshals; Are all volunteers, races can not happen without them. They are there purely to indicate the route and arrange assistance if required. They cannot in law stop or direct traffic and will be directed not to do so.

Contingency

There are countless scenarios which may cause a change to the planned arrangements for any triathlon and it is not possible to list them all. However the more foreseeable are: Swim: If for any reason the swim cannot take place then it will be substituted by a run of route and length to be determined, but appropriate to the length of the swim it replaces. Cycle: If part of the cycle course becomes unsuitable then an alternative course will be considered or if delays are anticipated on part of the course, eg. temporary traffic lights, then a deduction in time will be made for affected riders. Run: If any part of the run route becomes unsuitable then an alternative route or diversion around the affected part of the route will be considered. ANY CHANGES TO THE PLANNED FORMAT OR ROUTE WILL BE POSTED IN THE RACE BRIEFING NOTES AS SOON AS THEY ARE KNOWN.
