Sprint & Standard Distance Briefing Notes 2011 Beat the queues on Sunday and register at Godley's Cycles on Saturday between 2.30-6.00pm, and get a free gift, and the chance to win a free entry into a TriHard Race in 2012. Last Updated 17/08/2011 Welcome to the Stockton Triathlon 2010 was the first year of the all new Stockton Triathlon. In essence the course worked well so there have only been a couple of minor changes to improve the turn points that some found difficult. Arriving and car parking; There are many car parks in central Stockton, see this MAP. Car Parking is free on Sunday but note that the road closures for the event will make access to some of the car parks difficult. The 'Splash' car park (5 & 6 on the map) will be closed because of the event. If you do manage to get in there you won't get out before 4pm. Riverside car park (10) will be closed for the day., if carrying your bike on your car roof beware there may be height restrictions on some car parks. Registration; There will be Saturday registration at Godley's cycles, Nunthorpe between 2.30-6.00pm. On Sunday registration will be in the marquee next to transition on Stockton Riverside. It will be open from 11am to 12.30pm. At registration you will be given 2 race vest numbers, one must be displayed to the rear while you are cycling and one must be displayed to the front while running. They can of course both be on the same garment. You will also receive a timing chip and strap. This must be fitted securely around your ankle (either), before you start the swim and remain fitted until you finish. I suggest fitting it immediately you get it. They will be collected immediately you finish. They are expensive and we will invoice you for any not returned. You will also be issued with a bike tag. This is for security, attach it to your bike before taking it into the transition area (suggest attach to saddle rail). When taking your bike out of transition after the race your bike number will be checked against your vest number. You will also be body numbered. Transition area; Is situated on Stockton Riverside near to the Princess of Wales Bridge. The transition area closes and must be clear of competitors by 12.35pm. For safety and security access is restricted to competitors and officials only. In the transition area you will find rows of numbered bike racking. Rack your bike at the space corresponding to your race number. Place everything that you will need for your bike and run near to your bike. There is enough, but not a lot of room. Remove any large bags or boxes or place them to the edge of the transition area. Familiarise yourself with the way you will come out of the swim and where you exit onto the cycle route. The transition are will close at 12.35pm ready for the race briefing. So arrive in plenty of time. Race briefing 12.40 for both the Sprint and Standard Distance races will be next to the transition area. Attend suited up and ready to go straight to the swim entry point. Attendance is compulsory. Swim; The swim start will be in the water between the end of the entry/exit ramp and the last buoy. Please warm up between the ramp and the Princess of Wales Bridge, not on the course. The route is an anti-clockwise 750m circuit. As with any open water swim there is a risk of waterborne infections. If you have any open cuts or sores cover them with a waterproof dressing before entering the water. If you do get an upset stomach/ache and you are concerned contact your GP and inform them that you have recently swam in open water. Weils disease is serious but rare (52 cases in UK in 2009) symptoms are similar to flu. Information on waterborne infections can be found here . The Sprint Race (1 lap) will be wave 1 starting at 1pm.
The Standard Race (2 laps) will be wave 2 starting at 1.05pm. Cycle; Closed road circuit NON DRAFTING 7.7k per lap. Sprint Race 3 laps, Standard Race 5 laps. It is not possible for us to count your laps. It is your responsibility to ensure you do the correct number. If you have a bike computer set the trip to zero in transition. If you are in the Sprint Race once you have covered 16k or 10 miles you know you are on your last lap. For the Standard Race it’s 32k or 21 miles. I expect the track may be busy in places with riders on different laps and of different abilities. KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING. The turn point near to the 'Splash' swimming pool has changed and now takes in a paved and cobbled area outside the pool building. It could be slippery in the wet. It is quite a technical circuit so you will you will need to keep your wits about you. Although closed to public traffic there may be emergency service or official vehicles on the circuit. Run; 5k lap. 1 lap for Sprint Race, 2 laps for Standard Race. All on footpaths and pavements which are open to other pedestrians not connected to the race, please be considerate and polite even they are not. No Drafting: Must maintain a distance of at least 7m between you and the rider ahead. You have 20 seconds to overtake then you must drop back to the 7m position. Helmets; At all times that you are in contact with your bike your helmet must be securely fastened. Relay Teams; Your timing chip is your baton. Change over point is at your cycle transition point. The swimmer must wear the timing chip fastened to his/her ankle. The swimmer hands it to the cyclist who must fasten it securely to their ankle before removing their bike from the racking. On completion of the bike leg the cyclist must rack their cycle before removing the timing chip. The runner must securely fasten it to his /her ankle before setting off on the run. If not fastened to the ankle by any of the 3 team members...Disqualified. No mp3 players etc. Use of phones in transition even
before the race will result 2 minute penalty.
