Welcome to the second Stockton Mini-Triathlon. I know that for many of you this will be your first ever triathlon, congratulations you are joining a very friendly and fulfilling sport. This event is intended as an introduction to triathlon and will hopefully inspire you on to other longer events in the future.

Some may find the prospect of taking on the event rather daunting as you are unsure how it will all work. These notes will hopefully answer many of your questions and there are some important 'need to know' parts listed below. In general the process starts at the event registration from where you will be fully guided step by step.

Arriving and car parking; There are many car parks in central Stockton, see this MAP. Car Parking is free on Sunday but note that the road closures for the event will make access to some of the car parks difficult. The 'Splash' car park (5 & 6 on the map)will be closed all day because of the event. If you do manage to park there you won't be able to leave before around 4pm. Riverside car park (10) will be closed for the day., if carrying your bike on your car roof beware there may be height restrictions on some car parks.

Registration; Will be in the foyer of the "Splash" swimming pool. It will open at 7.30 am and close at 8.30am. At registration you will be given 2 race vest numbers, one must be displayed to the rear while you are cycling and one must be displayed to the front while running. They can of course both be on the same garment (see 'top tip' below re dry t-shirt contest). You will also receive a timing chip and strap. This must be fitted securely around your ankle (either), before you start the swim and remain fitted until you finish. I suggest fitting it immediately you get it. They will be collected immediately you finish. They are expensive and we will invoice you for any not returned. You will also be issued with a bike sticker. This is for security, attach it to your bike before taking it into the transition area (suggest around rear brake cable so that the number is clearly visible). When taking your bike out of transition after the race your bike number will be checked against your vest number. You will also be body numbered. It comes off, eventually.

Transition Area; For the mini-tri the transition area will be on Church Road directly outside "Splash". For safety and security access is restricted to competitors and officials only. In the transition area you will find rows of numbered bike racking. Rack your bike at the space corresponding to your race number. Place everything that you will need for your bike and run near to your bike. There is enough, but not a lot of room. Remove any large bags or boxes or place them to the edge of the transition area. Familiarize yourself with the way you will come out of the swim and where you exit onto the cycle route. The transition are will close at 8.45am ready for the race briefing. So arrive in plenty of time.

Swim; See diagram. Each length is 25m. You will start at the bottom right. and swim in a 'snake' pattern along the pool swimming up the right hand side of the lane then back down the left hand side. At the end of every second length you will dip under the lane rope and start up the next lane.At the end of the 10th length dip under the lane rope and swim to the exit dock half way up the pool on the left hand side.

You can swim front crawl or breast stroke, no back stroke. Please be aware of other swimmers, don't swim down the middle of the lane unless passing a slower swimmer. If you need to stop and get your breath that's fine, but make room for others to pass.

On leaving the exit dock continue out of the pool building, follow directions, to the transition area on Church Street. NO RUNNING UNTIL YOU GET OUTSIDE OF THE POOL BUILDING.

Swim Start Times: Not yet available.

Transition 1 (T1); It's up to you how long you spend in here, but remember the clock is continuing to tick. Dry off if you want or go straight to your cycling top (top tip - roll your shirt right up to the armpits before you go in for your swim. Then when when you get to transition put your head and arms through the appropriate holes and the rest of your top will fall into place. If you dont do this you will be the source of great amusement to onlookers.) Cycling shoes/trainers on. Helmet on and fastened, only then remove your bike from the rack. Run walk out of transition by the correct exit and mount your bike only when you have crossed the mount line.

Cycle: Please ensure your bike is in a safe and roadworthy condition before you arrive.

The cycle course is 3 laps of a 4.3k circuit. The roads are closed, however there is no guarantee that there will be no vehicles on the course. Access has to be permitted to emergency service vehicles and it may be necessary for an official vehicle to enter the circuit, so keep your wits about you.

Some riders will be faster than others so keep to the left hand side unless overtaking. It is your responsibility to do the correct number of laps. If you have a computer on your bike set the trip to zero. Then when you have done over 9k or 5.5 miles you know you are on your last lap. (alternatively 2 jelly babies in your pocket , eat one at the end of each lap then come in next time when they have gone.)

You cannot take pace or draft another rider. You must keep at least a 7m gap between you and the rider ahead. You have 20s to pass or you must drop back to 7m again.

At the turn round point at the end of your third lap take the exit route back to transition 2 (T2) outside the swimming pool. You must dismount before the dismount line then run/walk back to your transition point. Rack your bike before removing or undoing your helmet. Change into your running footwear if necessary and set off on the run.

Run; The run course is one lap of 3k. The finish is on the Riverside. The route is all on footpaths and pavements and will be fully signed and marshaled. There may be other pedestrians unconnected with the race, please be considerate and polite even if they are not.

Water will be available at T1 & T2 and also at the finish.
There will be massage/physio available at the finish, why not give your body a treat it’s only £10 for a 15 minute treatment and you will notice the benefit.

Use of mp3 players etc is not permitted during the race. Use of phones in transition even before the race may result in a 2 minute penalty.

YOUR BIKE AND ALL OTHER EQUIPMENT MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE TRANSITION AREA BY 11.30AM.
