Saturday July 24th 2010 ~ Cancelled~

Sprint Race ........750m swim - 20k cycle - 5k run

Standard Distance Race.... 1500m swim - 40k cycle - 10k run

June 16th 2010 It is with great regret that after consultation with our organisational partners in this event, Cumbria County Council and Silloth Town Action Group, that because of the lack of entries it has been decided to cancel the Silloth Triathlons planned as part of the Silloth Water Festival. At the time of writing only 28 entries have been confirmed and with just over 5 weeks to go it is unlikely that more than 50 entrants across both races would be achieved. With those numbers we would have in effect being subsidising each entrant by around £40. Triathlons don’t come cheap these days. Whilst I accept that making a loss is one of the perils of running a business I feel, more importantly, that it unfair to ask all of the individual volunteers and voluntary organisations necessary to make these things happen to give up so much of their time for so few entrants.

This is an exciting new event this year forming part of the Silloth Water Festival. This will be a race that you can bring the family to. On site there will be a fun fair, craft fairs, live music, refreshments with bar, and a spectacular kite flying event which last year attracted 3000 visitors. The race is supported by Cumbria Tourism and also has the backing of the Town of Silloth. There are good camping facilities within walking distance or you can of course combine the race with a stay in the Lake District National Park. The aim is to tempt people away from the more popular spots in the county and to show off what the coastal area has to offer.

And what it has to offer triathletes is a sea swim with the backdrop of the Scottish mountains across the Solway Firth, a largely flat and fast bike course taking the coastal route before heading inland through quiet and pretty lanes and villages. The last few miles are a flat and fast blast along largely quite A class roads. The run will be one or two laps of a 5k route along coastal paths.

I know I would say this, but both bike routes really are good. Not much traffic and some fast twisty lanes and although not pan flat there will be no need to bother your small chain ring.

Race Start time is a sociable 11.30am to catch the tide right which will allow time in the afternoon to enjoy some of the other festival activities. The program has yet to be finalised but it is hoped to have a cycle criterium around the Town Centre on the afternoon.
