750m sea swim - 20k closed road bike course - 5k flat run

Last updated 30/07/2011

Remember to bring a small towel to wipe the sand from your feet in Transition 1 from the swim.

Transition Plan now on the Race Route page. Worth looking at to get an idea of route through transition.

Welcome to the first Redcar Sprint Distance Triathlon. It seems amazing to me that only a few years ago it was virtually unheard of for a local authority to close any roads to allow a sporting event to take place and now a few forward thinking authorities have seen the value and benefits to very many people of encouraging these spectacular and colourful events into their town centres. Congratulations to Redcar and Cleveland Council for initiating this event and giving it their full support. Let’s hope that we as organisers and you as competitors can deliver an event that will firmly establish itself into the Redcar’s sporting calendar.

Please read these notes carefully as doing so will greatly ease the smooth running of the event and make your day all the more enjoyable.
Registration :- Will take place in the Redcar Bowl, Majuba Road, Redcar TS10 5BJ between 9am – 1030am. The transition area and race start is a 15 minute walk from registration. You will not be able to drive from registration nearer to the transition area, so travel light. If you can get your race kit in a rucksack you will be able to cycle there.

Timing Chip; You will be given an orange timing chip and neoprene ankle strap at registration. Please immediately attach the chip to the strap. If you find that you have to force it on you are doing it incorrectly, please ask rather than damage the strap. The chip must be worn around your ankle (either). If it’s not worn you won’t get a time. I suggest putting the timing chip around your ankle as soon as you get it. Remember to wear it under your wetsuit and be careful not take it off with your wetsuit. Please ensure that your chip is removed at the finish or returned if you do not complete the course. They are required for another race the following weekend.

Transition area:- For security and safety this area is for competitors only. At registration you will be issued along with your vest numbers a plastic bike tag with your number on it. This must be attached to your bike before you take it into transition and must remain on your bike until you remove it from the transition area after the race. On leaving transition you must show your vest number and it must correspond to your bike tag number before you will be allowed to remove your bike.

Swim :- 11.30am beach start. The swim course direction will be dependent upon weather conditions. The course will be marked by 1.5m yellow buoys. There will be a number of safety kayaks in the water together with a motorised rescue rib. The Redcar RNLI will also be on the water and have stated that they will remain in the vicinity unless called to an emergency elsewhere. The water will be cool. It was 13.4C on Sunday 24th July so it should not be too bad. Wetsuits will be compulsory. If you get into difficulty remember you will not sink in a wetsuit. Keep calm and keep breathing, if you need assistance raise an arm in the air towards one of the kayaks. They will come over to you and give you advice. Do not attempt to climb onto the kayak.

Cycle :- This is a non-drafting race. The cycle course is 6 laps of 3.37k (2.09 miles) per lap making 20.22k (12.54 miles) in total. It is not possible for us to count your laps for you as many will be on different laps. The simplest way is to make sure you have a cycle speedo fitted. Zero it when your bike is racked in transition. Then if you lose count, and it’s very easily done when racing, you can check your speedo. If you have done more than 17k (10.5 miles) you finish at the end of that lap. There will be a vast range of cycling ability and there must be some discipline. The default position is to cycle to the left hand side of the road and overtake only on the right. Be aware of other cyclists, particularly at the turn points.

There is a full road closure in force however that does not guarantee that motor vehicles unconnected with the race will find themselves on the course. This shouldn’t happen but remain alert to the possibility.

Run :- A straightforward out and back 5k run along the footpath on the seaward side of the Esplanade. Be aware that the footpaths are not closed to other users who have as much right as you to be there. Please do not be rude to anyone as this will generate complaints which I will have to deal with and could jeopardise the future of the event.

Litter :- There is absolutely no excuse for it and I know that 99% wouldn’t dream of ever dropping littering. However if you do need gels etc please do what the pros. do and tuck the used wrappers up the leg of your shorts.

Marshals:- Are all volunteers, please be nice to them, then perhaps they will help make other events possible for you in the future.

Finally: I wish everyone taking part in this race the very best of luck in you final preparations and of course in the race itself. Have a safe and enjoyable race.
