Keswick Mountain Festival Triathlon ~ Short Route

400m swim ~ 23k cycle~ 5k run

Revised swim course because of low water level

Both swims are open water and I think that is is safe to assume that the water temperature will be below 14C which means that the wearing of wetsuits will be compulsory. If you only have a "shorty" type wetsuit you may use it, but I would strongly advise that you make the effort to acquire a full body swimming wetsuit.

The swim start line will be between the buoy and the end of the second pier. Please only warm up in the area behind the start line and not down the course.

You can either swim to the start from the exit beach in Crow Park (100m) or walk down to the Foreshore. Allow about 10 minutes.

There will be a rescue launch and kayaks situated around the swim route. If you need assistance relax and wave your arm from Suisse to side towards the nearest craft. If it's a kayak hold on to its front or rear and allow then to tow you to safety. And remember you wont sink in a wetsuit.

Cycle:

Run with your bike out of Crow Park to the mount point on the road clear of the park gate. The route follows an anti-clockwise route around the lake. There is only one right hand turn which is about a mile after the start at the mini-roundabout on Main Street. Continue along the A5271 to the junction with Chestnut Hill. This is where the the Short Race turns left along Perth Road towards the A66 and the Long Race continues on the main road up Chestnut Hill. Enter the A66 and continue down the hill roundabout junction A591. Go straight ahead at this roundabout continuing along the A66. After about 1.5k turn sharp left into the B5289 into Portinscale. Continue along this road climbing to the base of Cat Bells, taking care on the cattle grid (dismount if necessary) until you approach the village of Grange. YOU REALLY MUST SLOW DOWN HERE. This is a popular tourist location with narrow roads and sharp bends. At the far end of the village is Grange Bridge. This is a very narrow bridge, you may have to wait for oncoming vehicles to clear. At the far side of the bridge turn left onto the B5289 towards Keswick. As you enter Keswick do not turn left at the Lake Rd roundabout back towards Crow Park but continue straight ahead for 1k to the junction with Crow Park Road (Booths Supermarket). Turn left here then after about 200m take right fork and continue to the dismount point at the rear entrance to Crow Park.

Run:

Run out of main park exit and turn right towards the Lake. After 200m take the path to your left along the side of the public toilets and into Cockshot Wood. Then follow as per the map. Towards the end of the lap as you exit the Woods back onto the Lake Foreshore turn right and return to finish in Crow Park.
