What is a swim sportive? It's
based on the principle of the increasingly popular cycle sportives that
are attracting massive numbers of followers. It's a noncompetitive but
timed swim open to anyone that wants to have a go. The course will be
over 1500m and will circumnavigate the beautiful Derwent Island close
to the north shore of Derwent Water within easy walking distance of
Keswick the adventure capitol of England. You will be issued with a
timing chip which you will wear around your ankle, there will be a start
window of about 15minute, depending on numbers, during which time you
decide when to cross the start timing mat and start your swim. It's
not a mass start, so there should be no 'swimming in a washing' machine
effect that you usually get at the start of races. When you exit the
water you cross another timing mat which stops the clock to record your
individual time. There will be full safety boat cover around the course.
Derwent water is a shallow lake and therefore relatively
warm. The key word in the last sentence is 'relatively'. For safety
reasons if the water is below 14C, and it will be, you must wear a wetsuit.
It's your choice as to what sort of wetsuit, if you want to wear a 'shorti'
type suit you may, rather you than me though. If you need to hire a
wetsuit A1 MultiSports, one of our race sponsors, will be at the event,
however you will need to pre-order via the A1 link on the right hand
side of this page. If you are looking to buy a wetsuit A1 MultiSport
also carry a good range for sale at competative prices.
And that is far from all. The
Derwent Island Swim is part of the Keswick Mountain Festival with loads
of other outdoor based activities to watch or get involved in. Click
on their logo to get the full picture.
This course now looks the more likely because
of the unusually low water level which causes very poor access to the
water from Crow Park.

Below is our first choice course however this
now looks unlikey because of the low water level.
